5 Tips to Help You Stay Healthy and Active During Social Distancing

Posted: April 2, 2020

The team at Alabama Surgical Associates in Huntsville is always committed to the safety and well-being of both our staff and patients, but especially now during the current COVID-19 pandemic we are facing as a country. While we specialize in many non-surgical and surgical weight loss procedures, we also prioritize providing helpful lifestyle and dieting advice to our community. Our expert team has developed 5 tips to help you stay active and on top of your weight loss goals during self-isolation and social distancing:

  1. Purchase Healthy Foods:
Rather than stocking up on high-fat and high-sodium foods like canned and prepared goods, take a look at the fresh and frozen produce available. There are plenty of great fruits and vegetables still in stock at most major grocery stores. These can also be used as a nutritious snack food alternative.
  2. Avoid Boredom Snacking:
While you are social distancing at home, it can be hard to avoid snacking for the sake of having something to do. We recommend creating a list of household chores and activities that can make better use of your time, like reading, cleaning, listening to music, or even meal-prepping with some of our delicious recipes.
  3. Stay Active with At-Home Workouts:
Gym closed? No problem! You can still create a great workout routine in the comfort of your own home. No weights? No problem! You don’t need weights to get a good workout routine in. Bodyweight movements, like pushups, burpees, and squats are great alternatives to workouts you would normally do on a machine at the gym.1 By increasing your heart-rate and incorporating both cardio and strength training for at least 15-20 minutes, you will have accomplished a great daily workout.1
  4. Go Outside and Get Fresh Air:
It’s important for both your mental and physical health to breathe fresh air as often as possible.2 You can accomplish this and a great cardio workout by going for a run or long walk around your neighborhood. Taking your dog for a walk is also a great reason to get out into the fresh air. Remember, keep a safe social distance from others.
  5. Stay Connected Online:
While you are practicing safe social distancing and are physically isolated from others, you can virtually connect with your loved ones in the online community. Take advantage of modern online features like video-chatting and re-connect with others on social platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. You can even coordinate group workouts with friends over Facetime, Google Hangout or Zoom!
