Megan's weight loss transformation *

Comorbidities: Plaque Psoriasis and Psoriatic arthritis

My heaviest weight was 257lbs. There were several different reasons why I decided to have weight loss surgery. I suffer from severe plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, and my weight started to affect my joints and made my pain a lot worse. Not to mention, my diet inflamed my skin and made my psoriasis flare to the point where my skin was almost 80% covered. It was extremely painful and very embarrassing. My weight affected my mental health and self-image. I never felt comfortable in anything I put on my body and was ashamed of myself. This brought on depression and anxiety and eventually led to needing medication to treat those symptoms. But, most importantly, my weight interferes with how I interact with my daughter. She has Autism and requires a little more care than your average 7-year-old. I couldn’t lift her, run with her, or play with her as she needed. I felt tired all of the time, and my body was so sore from all of the weight and health issues, and it affected my relationship with her.

I considered weight loss surgery for about a year before committing. I had a neighbor who went through with the procedure and watched her life transform. When the pandemic hit, I was stuck at home, which gave me time to think and realize how bad things had gotten. My daughter was out of school and wanted me to play, and I couldn’t do the things I needed to do for her. So, I called my neighbor friend and asked her about the surgery and which doctor she used, and I made my consultation appointment that same day.

Alabama Surgical was a great fit for me. The nurses and my surgeon were extremely helpful and gave me a lot of information. They made the process very easy to understand and prepared me for the change I was about to make in my life. From start to finish, they have been super supportive.

Life after weight loss surgery has been amazing. I have lost 140lbs and feel better than amazing. I am no longer ashamed of myself when I look in the mirror. I’m confident and secure in my body, and I haven’t had that in a very long time. Most of all, I can care for my daughter in the ways she needs without pain. My depression and anxiety have melted away, and I was able to stop taking some of the extra medications that I was taking.
